Our Resources

My team and I get asked a lot of questions about mindset, especially when speaking with Clients who want to level-up their lives.
Ignite your spark, change your mindset and create actions to achieve your goals.
I believe it’s because we are all focused on developing and growing our own mindset, personally and in our roles, that Clients can see the difference it makes for us, and want to make sure they’re harnessing that power too.
F.A.Q.
What is mindset and why is it important?
For me, mindset is how you view things.
There’s often a mindset, then there’s an action after.
Let’s look at your financial mindset (whether that be investments, business or properties) if you’re happy with where you’re at; you’ve got a particular goal and you know that you’re on the path to reach it, then clearly you don’t need to change the way that you think.
But if you are wanting a different outcome with your finances, then you’ve got to change the way that you think about that particular goal.
Here’s an example; in the morning, if you’ve got a meeting to attend, you’ll be thinking about the outfit that you’ve got to wear, the type of tie (do you even wear a tie?) and what colour shoes? That’s because you know how the other person might perceive you in that meeting could change the outcome that you’re looking for.
So it’s the same thing with with your financials; I think your mindset supports and changes the actions, which lead to your goals.
How do you know if you need to work on your mindset?
If you want to upgrade your life and change the way that your finances look in the future, then clearly you need to think differently, you need to act differently.
Depending on your goal, what you’re looking for will dictate how much you need to change. If it’s a subtle difference then maybe it’s just a few things you can work on with your mindset, which then leads to a different action. If you’re looking for a huge change, then you’ve got to take bigger steps in changing your actions.
Sometimes it’s more difficult to to double your output than it is to multiply it by ten.
I see a lot of people trying to double something, they keep doing what they’re doing, but try to do more of it and fail.
If you need to make a significant change, it actually is easier because you’ll focus on changing your habits completely.
What steps can people take to improve their mindset?
There are four things you can work on to improve mindset.
- Ask yourself, do you actually want to improve? And if so, what needs to change? Be honest with yourself and identify what it is that you are wanting to change.
- Write it down. It’s so powerful to actually write down what it is that you are wanting to change and put some notes around it. Include things like why do you want it to be different? What impact will that have on you or your family?
- Take advice. Whether or not you are having a direct Coach, or you’re listening to things from me, or other podcasts or books, always take advice (in whichever area you want to work on) from someone who has done it or is now doing it successfully.
- Don’t procrastinate. So many people will put things off because they’re trying to reach or search for perfection or wait until it’s perfect. The best thing to do is to start and accept that it’s never going to be perfect, but the actual failing within the starting process is the best thing that can happen for you. So just start today
Can you tell us your favourite mindset quotes and books?
One of my favourite quotes has always been Einstein when he said:
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results
So if you are happy with the results that you’ve got, just keep doing the same things all the time. But if you are wanting a different future, you vision things to be bigger and better than today, then change your mindset and change your actions.
I’m a big fan of Dean Graziosi and I listen to his podcasts as a part of my daily habits. I think he’s brilliant. I also got a lot out of the Audible version of ‘Awaken the Giant Within‘ by Tony Robbins.
By the way, you can get a free 30 day trial here if you’re new to Audible.
Finally, Zig Ziglar‘s ‘See You at the Top’ is another fantastic Audible book on mindset, giving and collaborating and just having a great attitude.
Fia Odeen, our Operations Director has a great list of books and quotes to add:
- Dare To Lead by Dr Brené Brown
- Tony Robbins quote: “Give yourself the time to live your life without limitations”
- Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg – who is a big advocate of ‘progress, not perfection!’
- What would you do if you weren’t afraid? by Michal Oshman
- Wayne Dyer quote: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
- WINNING by Tim S. Grover
- Personality Isn’t Permanent by Ben Hardy
- The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz
- Jim Rohn quote “Don’t say if I could I would, say if I can I will”
Which steps do you take to improve your mindset James?
I always try to start the day on a positive note with this routine…
When I wake up in the morning, I make sure that the first thing I don’t do is grab my phone and look at emails or news or WhatsApp. That’s like playing Russian roulette, you don’t really know what you’re going to get and you could set the day upon a negative vibe. It took a while to practice this, but now it’s a second nature.
Then, I think of two things I did really well the day before and two things that I’m grateful for, then I’ll go and have a green juice or some water or coffee.
Finally, I will write down the things I want to achieve for that day, or things that I’m trying to focus on for the week or a particular goal. Everything is positive and focussed in my mind. I won’t even look at the emails or news or anything like that for a good hour into the day.
By starting the day with a positive vibe, it’s building bricks for great habits that create the changes I want.
What advice do you give to somebody who thinks their mindset can’t be changed?
This is a really interesting one, because a lot of my clients ask this and my main answer is we all change over time without even trying.
All habits and thoughts that we have in our mind, are a result of what is going on in our lives.
The easiest way to think of this, for someone who thinks they can’t change is to ask yourself the question, honestly, do you think you’re the same now as you were 5 or 10 years ago? If you’re honest with yourself, the answer will be no.
You’re different, you have different friends, different habits, technology is different. Now we all watch Netflix, as opposed to renting a video or going to the cinema. We all spend more time on Instagram than we do reading a newspaper.
We act differently, we think differently, as a result of that we have different friends, different activities that we want to do. You know, we all think differently now, because of COVID. Maybe we’re all more nervous about travelling now. Whereas in 2018, it was different.
Once you’ve identified a goal, it’s very, very easy to subtly change the habits that you have, and in 5 or 10 years from from now, things can be significantly different.
Another really good quote, I think was from Tony Robbins or Jim Rohn that said that everybody overestimates what we can do in one year, but massively underestimates what we can do in five or 10.
So a little short shift now, can make a significant difference to your future.
